Building Meaningful, Healthy Connections Between Sponsors and Students
At Tsering’s Fund, we believe that student sponsorship is about more than providing access to education. It is also an opportunity to encourage a young person, celebrate their accomplishments, and remind them that people around the world believe in their future.
Over the years, many wonderful connections have developed between our sponsors and students. These relationships can be incredibly meaningful for both students and sponsors. As technology becomes more accessible in Nepal, however, students may also have more opportunities to contact their sponsors directly through mobile phones and messaging apps.
While these messages are usually sent with good intentions, we recognize that communication can sometimes become frequent or unexpected. To help protect the well-being of both students and sponsors, Tsering’s Fund has established a new Sponsor–Student Communication Policy.
Supporting Healthy Boundaries
Sponsors generously make a commitment to support a student’s education. That commitment does not include an expectation that sponsors will respond to every message, fulfill additional requests, send gifts, or maintain ongoing direct communication.
We want our sponsors to feel comfortable setting boundaries and responding in ways that work for them. There should never be pressure or an expectation to provide additional financial support or personal assistance beyond a sponsor’s original commitment.
At the same time, we want students to understand that communication with sponsors should remain respectful, appropriate, and manageable.
What Should Sponsors Do If They Receive Messages?
If a student reaches out directly, sponsors are welcome to respond when they feel comfortable doing so. However, sponsors are never obligated to respond to every message.
If a sponsor receives repeated or unsolicited messages, feels overwhelmed by communication, or feels pressured to provide additional financial support, gifts, or other assistance, we encourage them to contact Tsering’s Fund.
Please reach out to us promptly at jamie@tseringsfund.org. Our team can provide guidance, address concerns with the appropriate school or student, and help manage communication when needed.
How Tsering’s Fund Will Help
Our responsibility is to support both sides of the sponsorship relationship. Tsering’s Fund will work to:
Provide guidance to students and sponsors about appropriate communication
Help establish and maintain healthy boundaries
Intervene when communication becomes inappropriate or overwhelming
Work with our partner schools to reinforce appropriate communication practices
Ensure that sponsor–student relationships remain respectful and supportive
Keeping Sponsorship Meaningful
The goal of this policy is not to discourage meaningful connections. Quite the opposite: we want sponsor–student relationships to remain positive, encouraging, and sustainable for everyone involved.
A thoughtful letter, an update from a student, or a message celebrating an academic accomplishment can be a wonderful part of the sponsorship experience. Clear expectations and healthy boundaries help ensure that these interactions remain encouraging rather than becoming a source of stress or obligation.
Most importantly, students should know that their sponsors care about their education and future, while sponsors should feel confident that their generosity is valued without creating expectations beyond their commitment.
Thank you for helping us create a sponsorship program built on respect, encouragement, and mutual care. Together, we can ensure that these important relationships continue to have a positive impact on the students we support.
Questions or concerns about sponsor–student communication can always be directed to jamie@tseringsfund.org.
