Leadership Begins with Example

As Hero Camp has grown, so have the young women who attend it.

This year marks an exciting milestone for Tsering's Fund. 25 sponsored students completed Class 10, passed the SEE, and continued into Class 11 this year, while another 23 graduated from Class 12 and will soon begin university studies. As more students pursue higher education and new opportunities, Hero Camp has evolved alongside them. Today, the camp is designed exclusively for girls in Class 9 and above, creating an environment where leadership, confidence, and preparing for the future take center stage.

Leadership is woven into every aspect of Hero Camp—not through lectures, but through example.

Each year, a team of dedicated adult volunteers travels to Nepal to create a safe, encouraging environment where every girl feels seen, valued, and capable. Volunteers aren't simply activity leaders. They are mentors who model kindness, humility, respect, teamwork, and servant leadership in everything they do. Whether helping girls try a new activity, listening during quiet conversations, or solving the inevitable challenges that arise throughout the week, they demonstrate that leadership begins with caring for others.

The philosophy is simple: every interaction matters. Some of the most meaningful moments happen not during scheduled activities, but in the conversations between them—sharing meals, journaling together, riding the bus, or laughing around an evening campfire. These everyday moments build trust, strengthen friendships, and give the girls the confidence to discover their own voices.

An important part of Hero Camp's leadership model is the selection of two Youth Leaders each year. Chosen for their maturity, character, and potential, these outstanding students work alongside the adult volunteer team throughout camp. Rather than simply helping with logistics, they serve as ambassadors between the girls and the volunteers, assist with communication and translation, and gain firsthand experience leading with empathy, confidence, and responsibility. The goal is not only to make camp run smoothly but to intentionally invest in the next generation of leaders.

Throughout the week, every participant is encouraged to contribute, collaborate, and step outside her comfort zone. Whether participating in group discussions, exploring new places, reflecting through journaling, or sharing dreams about future careers, the girls discover that leadership isn't about being the loudest person in the room. It's about lifting others up, working together, and having the courage to try something new.

Hero Camp is about much more than a week away from home. It is an investment in the young women who will become tomorrow's teachers, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and changemakers. By surrounding them with positive role models today and giving them opportunities to practice leadership themselves, Tsering's Fund is helping prepare a generation of confident young women ready to make a lasting difference in their communities.
